The Phantom of the Opera DVD box set: what lies beneath the surface?

The Phantom of the Opera DVD box set opens at the Paris Opera-House in the late nineteenth-century, with the production of “Hannibal” (the elephant-tamer) coming to a halt when its temperamental star, La Carlotta (Minnie Driver), walks out during a dress rehearsal after threats from the mysterious Phantom (Gerard Butler), who has haunted the opera house for years. But she also finds herself the object of affection of a childhood friend, the theatre’s wealthy patron, Vicompte Raoul de Chagny (Patrick Wilson). Torn between the striking Raoul and enigmatic Phantom, Christine sets off a rivalry between the two men for her love.

The music is still a delight. Every song is a rousing piece made up of either haunting lyrics (Christine sings of the “angel” as being sent by her deceased father) or cheerful fluffiness (one number has the two managers singing of the trouble the Phantom is causing). Even if you’ve never heard the songs or seen the show, you may be tempted to sing along.

The Phantom of the Opera DVD box set, much like the play, is about what lies beneath the surface. Beneath the opera house lays the dark, unsettling Phantom, and beneath his silky, featureless white mask is a face horribly deformed. Yet, for all of its references to the deceptions of appearance, there’s actually nothing underneath the surface of this film.

Finding Nemo DVD box set is one of the cleverest films that I've seen. It combines brilliant animation with a great story and terrific voices to present an experience that works on many different levels.

In the film, there's a fish, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who has a short-term memory problem. A premise like that might not seem to be worth much, but the filmmakers get a lot out of mileage out it, coming up with jokes in a creative manner. There are several other things that are hilarious, including the mellow sea turtles, the whale-speak episode, the fish-eating sea gulls, the sharks who've vowed to not eat fish, and the co-inhabitants of the aquarium in which Nemo finds himself in. There are a lot of lines in the film that'll stick in your head, particularly the ones uttered by Dory.

The plot is set in a typical action-movie fashion, where both Marlin and Nemo end up in a series of adventures, including first reading the diver's snorkel mask to find out the address where Nemo is likely to be held, battling a horde of jellyfish and traversing the East Australian Current, and finally end up in Sydney Harbour.

It's hard to describe in words what a great film Finding Nemo is. I’m strongly crazy at it. The reasons why I am crazy at the Find Nemo:

1. How stubborn thought, we can modify and change;

It is threatened with being chopped down by the forces of evil, and she climbs it and won't come down. That shows some character, muses Bryce's grandfather Chet (John Mahoney). If he were Bryce, he'd notice a girl like that. Bryce begins to catch on.

The way "Flipped"  is presented, first telling a story through the eyes and thoughts of Bryce and then again through the eyes and thoughts of Juli, could have easily been a disaster in less capable hands, but, surprisingly, the audience never feels bored by the repetition. Nearly every event in the film is told at least twice but, because you are so invested in the characters, you actually begin to eagerly anticipate what the other side of the story will be. There are scenes in which Bryce senses Juli’s emotions, but you’ll want to take that look behind the curtain and understand why she feels the way she does.

When hearing the ending music of this film: let it be me, those memory left in the past begin to spread…

The authorities are happy to help him open a factory to build enameled cooking utensils that army kitchens can use. He is happy to hire Jews because their wages are lower, and Schindler will get richer that way.

All in all, we get, as the title implies, a list of people, of faces, of stories that make the atrocities of World War II real.

Die Welle

A huge hit in its native country, The Wave（Die Welle） DVD box set is loosely based on true events (although they happened in California, not Germany) and stars Jurgen Vogel as hip, leather-jacketed teacher Mr Wenger, who's annoyed when he's assigned autocracy instead of anarchy during School Political Project Week. After watching the Wave (Die Welle) DVD box set, it gives us a unique view of high school life, perhaps only to people who aren’t from Germany (where the movie is set), where it’s not only all about bullying, gangs, and boring, run-of-the-mill storylines involving cheerleaders or school newspaper headlines. It doesn’t show the students as immature but rather as having potential and interesting ideas of their own, which I think reflects the truth of the real world.

The group's creation ("The Wave" of the title) starts off like an innocent and fairly simple exercise to get the students to work together and show their true potential. But as the movie goes on there are some fantastic layers of complexity which build up as the group gets more and more out of hand. We go from trying to come up with names and logos to running about the town spraying graffiti and fighting with the rival “Anarchist” gang. The well executed way in which this complexity comes about can only be put across if you see the movie for yourself.
